Vol. 488 No. 2

Written Answers. - Genetically Modified Products.

John Bruton

Question:

158 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the genetically modified products currently on sale on the EU market for which consent has been granted under directive 90/220 in the case of animal feeds; if any of these products are on sale on the Irish market; by whom the consents for marketing of these products are granted; and whether consents granted in one country are recognised in all other EU member countries. [5996/98]

To date, consent under Directive 90/220/EEC has been granated for placing 12 genetically modified products, some of which include animal feed uses, on the EU market. The current list of these products, available from the European Commission, is appended to this reply. Under Article 17 of the directive, the European Commission is responsible for publishing data on products for which marketing consent has been granted, including the use or uses of covered by the consents. Further details are available directly from the Commission.

The regulatory procedures for marketing genetically modified products under Directive 90/220/EEC operate at Community level and decisions in each case are Community decisions, irrespective of the member state which handles the notification and issues the final decision. Marketing consent granted under the directive applies throughout the Community.
