Vol. 488 No. 2

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Status.

Nora Owen

Question:

203 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science the outcome of a recent meeting with St. Teresa's national school, Balbriggan, County Dublin, and his Department with reference to the request to give disadvantaged status to this school. [5982/98]

At my recent meeting with representatives of the school in question, a number of issues was raised including the problem of educational disadvantage among the pupils attending the school. I was very impressed with the commitment of the school's staff and the strength of their case.

The Deputy will be aware that this issue was not addressed by previous Ministers. I am pleased to inform the Deputy that as a first step a divisional inspector from my Department visited the school last week and has made arrangements to have further consultation with the management authorities of the school before submitting his report.
