Vol. 488 No. 3

Written Answers - Local Authority Housing.

Ivor Callely

Question:

86 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the total expenditure on local authority housing projects in 1997; the likely expenditure in 1998; the required expenditure to adequately address the housing needs of the local authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6040/98]

A sum of £214 million has been made available for the provision of local authority housing in 1998 including £20 million for the redevelopment of Ballymun, an increase of £34 million, or 18.9 per cent, on the estimated expenditure of £180 million in 1997. The provision will enable local authorities to meet commitments on their ongoing programmes and to fund a programme of 3,900 new starts or acquisitions in 1998.

Local authorities commenced or acquired 3,500 houses in 1997. In addition, housing needs are met through output under the complementary social housing programmes and vacancies arising in the existing local authority housing stock.

Question:

87 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the total number of people on housing lists in the four Dublin local authority areas; if he will give a breakdown of these lists; if he will provide a statistical breakdown of the homeless list; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6041/98]

In March 1996, local authorities carried out an assessment of housing needs and of the numbers of homeless people. Details of the assessment for each local authority including those in the Dublin area were published in the 1996 housing statistics bulletin, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library.

My Department does not have information on the number of current applicants for local authority housing. The next statutory assessment of local authority housing needs and of the homeless is due in March 1999 and the results will provide the basis for the future planning of the Government's response to social housing needs.
