Vol. 488 No. 5

Other Questions. - Archaeological Projects.

Austin Deasy

Question:

13 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the progress, if any, being made on the archaeological dig at King John's Castle, Dungarvan, County Waterford; and when it will be open for public viewing. [6539/98]

A final season of archaeological excavation has commenced at the castle. Following this five week excavation, a report on its findings will be submitted for consideration to Dúchas, the Heritage Service of my Department. Dúchas will shortly commence a programme of conservation and partial restoration works funded by the EU Operational Programme for Tourism 1994-99. It is expected the project will be completed by the end of 1999 when the castle will be opened to the public.

I am happy with that reply and I will be pleased if the schedule is adhered to.
