Vol. 488 No. 7

Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers.

Pat Carey

Question:

190 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Finance if he will review the case of suitability for disabled driver status for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7437/98]

Relief from tax for disabled drivers is provided for in the Disabled Drivers and Disabled Passengers (Tax Concessions) Regulations, 1994. It is a fundamental condition for relief that the applicant meets the qualifying medical criteria specified in the regulations and is in possession of a certificate to that effect issued by the local director of community care and medical officer of health.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that they have not received an application or inquiry from the person referred to by the Deputy. It would appear from the details supplied that the person may have been refused the required certificate on the basis that he does not meet the appropriate medical criteria. There is provision in this event for an appeal to be made to the Disabled Drivers Medical Board of Appeal, 25 Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.

The medical criteria for relief under the regulations were drawn up following wide-ranging consultations with interested parties, including many groups representing the interests of disabled persons. I have no plans to extend the scope of the relief at this time.
