Vol. 488 No. 7

Written Answers. - National Monuments.

John McGuinness

Question:

330 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if her Department will carry out an audit on signs indicating the location of national monuments in Kilkenny city or county with a view to upgrading the condition of the signs and the information offered on each; if the Department will ensure that there is sufficient directional signs for each monument in the county; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7086/98]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that Dúchas, the Heritage Service of my Department, in co-operation with the relevant local authorities, has completed a specific programme of directional signage for all national monuments in State care in County Kilkenny —— 34 sites in all. A high standard of modern, informational, signage is also being provided on site, at a range of other national monuments throughout the country. This programme is ongoing and will be of benefit to visitors to national monuments in County Kilkenny and elsewhere. The work on the programme will be carried out on a systematic basis according to priorities and the availability of resources and, where necessary, in conjunction with the relevant local authorities.
