Vol. 488 No. 7

Written Answers. - Industrial Disputes.

Question:

67 Dr. Upton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the action, if any, she has taken to resolve the strike in a company (details supplied) in County Clare; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7368/98]

The industrial action in the company in County Clare referred to by the Deputy followed a rejection by employees of a Labour Court recommendation. Failure to resolve the dispute may have grave consequences for the 200 jobs in the company.

I am concerned about those developments, particularly as the Labour Court has issued a recommendation which sought to provide a resolution to the dispute. The court is, I understand, in contact with both sides to assist them in that process.

I urge the parties to engage in immediate discussions, particularly in view of the importance of the 200 jobs to the local area.
