Vol. 489 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Offences.

Question:

108 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will introduce a penalty points system to punish minor offences under the Road Traffic Acts, 1961 to 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7599/98]

The Road Traffic Acts already provide for the imposition of certain disqualifications and endorsements in respect of road traffic offences. The possibility of establishing a penalty points system in Ireland such as that which operates in many other jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, is being examined in the context of the national road safety strategy being prepared in my Department.
