Derek McDowell

Question:

56 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Education and Science if the ScoilNet service is on line; if so, the number of individual visits to the site which have been made in 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7515/98]

As stated in Schools IT 2000 — A Policy Framework for the New Millennium, ScoilNet will be developed as one of the support mechanisms under Schools IT 2000. ScoilNet will be established and managed by the National Centre for Technology in Education, NCTE. The director of the NCTE has recently taken up duty and will be supported in his work by four recently appointed co-ordinators, one of whom will have particular responsibility for ScoilNet.

Plans will be developed for ScoilNet at an early date and all schools will be informed when ScoilNet comes on line. I am confident that ScoilNet will be an excellent resource as regards the provision of information, advice and support to schools on Schools IT 2000 and also on educational ICTs issues generally.
