Vol. 489 No. 1

Written Answers. - Adult Literary Survey.

Ulick Burke

Question:

68 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science the discussions, if any, he has had with other Government Departments in relation to the international adult literacy survey. [7499/98]

While I have brought the international literacy survey to the attention of other Departments that have an interest in it, action on foot of the report is primarily a matter for my Department. Following publication of the report and consultation with the Department of Finance an additional £250,000 was allocated to the adult literacy provision for 1997.

The funding was increased by a further £1.75 million in the recent budget, and the matter of how to put the extra funds to most effective use is under consideration in consultation with all interested parties.
