Vol. 489 No. 1

Written Answers. - Psychological Service.

Willie Penrose

Question:

81 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science where the 15 psychologists recently recruited to the primary schools psychological service will be located; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7528/98]

The Department of Education and Science has organised, in co-operation with Mary Immaculate College of Education, Limerick, a development project for the extension of the psychological service to primary schools. This involves the appointment, by way of open competition, of 15 educational psychologists on three year contracts. The competition has been held and the 15 successful candidates have all indicated their intention to accept the offer of employment. They are expected to take up their posts over the next few months. These psychologists will be based in the following regions: north-west, west, mid-west, south, south-east, midlands, east Leinster and north-east Leinster. My Department will decide on the actual schools to which they will be assigned after the psychologists have participated in an induction programme lasting for six to eight weeks.
