Vol. 489 No. 2

Written Answers. - Industrial Policy Report.

Ivor Callely

Question:

89 Mr. Callely asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the progress, if any, on the recommendations of the Culliton report; the outstanding recommendations to be implemented; if she is supportive of all outstanding recommendations; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7719/98]

As the Deputy will appreciate, a considerable period of time has elapsed since the publication of the Government response to the report of the industrial policy review group, the Culliton report, in 1993. In the intervening period, there has been considerable progress across the key areas covered by the review group in, for example, infrastructure, competition policy, education and training, taxation, and the structure and operations of the industrial development agencies. This has been reflected in the outstanding performance of business in growing sales and employment.

The focus on competitiveness issues created by the Culliton report has been strengthened by the establishment of the National Competitiveness Council, operating under the aegis of the Taoiseach's Department, whose first annual report was recently published.
