Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Military Training.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

238 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Defence the cost to Zambia of training each of the military cadets who graduated in 1997; and whether those costs were fair and reasonable in view of the relative poverty of the country, it being one of the major recipients of our aid programmes. [8878/98]

Ten Zambian Army cadets received training at the Military College, Curragh Camp, between 2 October 1995 and 7 July 1997. The total cost was £24,300 per person for the 21 month period which included instruction, training, accommodation and uniform clothing. These cadets were accepted for training following requests by the Zambian Government which undertook to pay the costs involved. Five groups of Zambian cadets have been trained in Ireland since 1967.
