Vol. 489 No. 7

Written Answers. - Irish-UK Defence Co-Operation.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

78 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Defence the implications, if any, of the term, "co-operation on defence arrangements", as agreed between the Irish and British government. [5682/98]

In December 1997 a Progress Report on Co-operation between Ireland and the United Kingdom (Developing East-West Relations) was issued by the Taoiseach and Prime Minister Blair in the margins of the European Council meeting in Luxembourg and was laid before both Houses of the Oireachtas. This report included information in relation to areas of co-operation between the respective forces of each country. These mainly consist of training, exchanges of information, fishery protection, search and rescue co-operation, and good-will visits. It is intended to continue co-operation and exchanges of this nature.
