Enda Kenny

Question:

306 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of remedial teachers appointed in County Mayo for each of the past three years; the locations or clusters to which they were appointed; his views on the priority and consideration given to his Department's inspectors' reports in relation to claims for remedial teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9991/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 305 and 306 together.

My Department recently embarked on an exercise aimed at establishing the precise position regarding remedial needs in all primary schools. As part of this exercise, all schools, including those in County Mayo, have been invited to make fresh applications based on their present level of remedial need. Responses to this request are currently being received by my Department and the closing date for all such applications is 30 April 1998. In these circumstances, my Department is not yet in a position to indicate the number of applications for a remedial service which may be received from County Mayo.

Two remedial posts were allocated to schools in County Mayo for the 1997-98 school year, as follows:

(a) Scoil Lios na Maol (base)

Leithnis

Clochánaí

Gort Sceithe

An Roibín

Teach Chaoin, Crossboyne

(b) Cill Mheain (base)
Gort an tSiúrdáin
Baile Cuisín
Sruthar
No remedial posts were allocated to County Mayo for the 1996-97 school year.
Two remedial posts were allocated to schools in County Mayo for the 1995-96 school year, as follows:
(a) Bangor Erris (base)
Drumslide NS, Ballycroy
Drumallagh NS, Ballycroy
Shraghnamonragh NS, Ballycroy
Geesala NS, Ballina
Doohoma NS, Geesala
(b) Corclough NS, Belmullet (base)
Aughleam NS, Ballina
Kilmore, Erris, Belmullet
Achadh an Ghlaisin
Glencastle NS, Bunnahowen
Shragh NS, Bunnahowen
My capacity to allocate additional remedial teacher posts in any given year is dependent on resource availability and the level of competing demand from other special needs areas. I have to determine priorities and allocate available resources to best effect. I am currently reviewing provisions across the special needs area, including the remedial area, to ensure that all available resources are deployed as effectively as possible.
I can assure the Deputy that the needs of schools in County Mayo will be considered in the context of any additional remedial teacher allocations which may be undertaken for the forthcoming school year.
