Vol. 490 No. 6

Written Answers. - Complaints Against Gardaí.

John Gormley

Question:

101 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the accusations of heavy handedness by the gardaí, including strip searching, in their treatment of a group (details supplied) detained under the provisions of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1982; if he has verified these allegations; and if he considers this behaviour acceptable. [10937/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a number of complaints have been made under the Garda Síochána (Complaints) Act, 1986 arising from the arrest of 11 persons on 4 April, 1998 at Grafton Street under the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994. In the circumstances, it would not be appropriate for me to make any further comment on the matter.
