Vol. 490 No. 6

Written Answers. - Education Projects.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

107 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received a request from a group (details supplied) to nominate at least one representative to work with the task forces set up in each of four local authority flat complexes in the group's area to address the issue of education disadvantage experienced by those communities; the reason a nominee has not so far been appointed; if he will name a nominee to each of the task forces; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10867/98]

My Department has received and has replied to representations from the Fatima Mansions task force.

My Department has assigned one person on a full-time basis to Area Development Management Limited, ADM, and it is the responsibility of this person to co-ordinate and advise on the educational content of plans submitted for funding to ADM by the area based partnerships and community groups under the Operational Programme 1994/99. My Department has also nominated a person to the educational sub-committee of each partnership, including the Canal Communities Partnership, to advise on proposals being formulated at local level. This latter nominee is also available for consultation with groups within the partnership areas on educational matters which those groups may address from time to time. Advice to the task forces to which the Deputy refers would come within the remit of these nominees and I have already advised the Fatima Mansions task force of my Department's nominee and where he can be contacted.

The question of the level of representation from my Department available to ADM and local partnership is being kept under review.
