Vol. 490 No. 6

Written Answers. - Second Level Schools.

Seán Ryan

Question:

117 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has for the provision of a second level school in the Donabate and Portrane area, County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10888/98]

There are no plans in my Department at present for the provision of a second level school in the Donabate and Portrane area of County Dublin. Pupils from this area mainly attend second level schools in Swords, Malahide, Sutton, and Balbriggan. I am satisfied that the second level schools in these areas are catering adequately for current demand.

I am aware, however, that substantial housing development is taking place and planned for Donabate and Portrane. The implications of these developments for the primary schools in the area are currently being addressed in my Department.

The situation in this area will be kept under review in the planning section of my Department. Should the need for the provision of additional second level facilities arise, a decision will be made on whether it can be met through the extension of existing second level schools in that general area, or through the provision of a school in Donabate-Portrane.
