Vol. 490 No. 7

Written Answers. - Speech and Language Therapy.

Question:

175 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Ard Mhuire national school, Tallaght, Dublin 24, requires a second class for children with speech and language disorder and that, before such a request can be accepted by his Department, the Eastern Health Board must be in a position to provide the speech and language therapist required for this service; the discussions, if any, he has had to date in relation to this issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11177/98]

The provision of speech and language therapy in the Dublin area is a matter for the Eastern Health Board. I have had inquiries made with the board and I am informed that the board is currently reviewing the further development of special language classes in its area. While the review has not been completed, it is anticipated that it will indicate the need for additional special language classes in Dublin where there are currently seven such classes.
