Vol. 491 No. 1

Written Answers. - Digital Television.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

92 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will outline her role and that of the Department of Public Enterprise and the Office of the Director of Telecommunications Regulation in the allocation of the six multiplexes; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11204/98]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 17 and 19 of 11 March 1998. I indicated in that reply that it is my responsibility to develop proposals for the establishment of appropriate statutory structures to oversee the introduction and ongoing regulation, from a broadcasting perspective of Irish Digital Broadcasting Services and that I envisage consultation with the Minister for Public Enterprise. Matters relating to telecommunications policy fall under the remit of the Minister for Public Enterprise and there is a role for the Director of Telecommunications Regulation in relation to radio frequency spectrum management and technical licensing.
