Question:

166 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science if favourable consideration will be given to the appointment of a remedial teacher for St. Anne's national school, Ardclough, Straffan, County Kildare, in view of the fact that there are 130 pupils attending this school and the projection for the next academic year is 140 pupils; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Liam Lawlor

Question:

168 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will respond to the special needs of a school (details supplied) in Dublin 22 which services a substantially disadvantaged catchment area and is seeking full remedial teacher services for its pupils. [11617/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 162, 165, 166 and 168 together.

I can assure the Deputy that it is my intention to fulfil my commitment that all national schools will be given access to a remedial resource over the next two years.

My Department recently embarked on an exercise aimed at establishing the precise position regarding such needs in all primary schools. As part of this exercise, all schools have been invited to make fresh applications based on their present level of need. This data will allow for an up to date assessment of needs in the context of any resource allocations undertaken for the forthcoming school year.

I can assure Deputies the needs of the schools to which they refer will be considered in the context of any additional remedial or resource teacher allocations which may be undertaken.
