Vol. 491 No. 2

Written Answers. - Family Support Services.

Michael Bell

Question:

31 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason for the delay in processing the case of the death of a person (details supplied); his views on the grief and suffering the delay has caused to his family; the steps, if any, his Department has taken to arrange for professional help or support from State agencies to help them; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11477/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a warrant was obtained in February 1995 for the arrest of a person in connection with the death of the person referred to by the Deputy. In March 1995 the person was charged and returned for trial. Subsequently, in July 1996 the person in question was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1994, at the time of the incident, the family of the victim were put in contact with Victim Support on the advice of the Garda officer in charge of the investigation.
