Vol. 491 No. 2

Written Answers. - Drug Seizures.

Ivor Callely

Question:

33 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total quantities of illegal drugs seized by the gardaí over the past 12 months; the involvement of Europol in these seizures; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11361/98]

The Garda authorities have informed me that the most recent published statistics available of illegal drugs seized, are for the year 1996 — details follow. The Garda Síochána Annual Report for 1997 will be published in the coming months.

I am also informed by the Garda authorities that the Europol National Unit based at Garda Headquarters liaises on an ongoing basis, through its liaison officer, based at Europol Headquarters, The Hague, with various law enforcement agencies throughout the European Union. This liaison is carried out at the request of the various Garda units throughout the State, as the need arises. The level of the liaison depends on the nature of the investigation and the inquiry(ies) to be carried out. The inquiries relate to a broad area of criminality, within the mandate of Europol. Due to the nature and extent of the operations in question, it is impossible to quantify the exact involvement of Europol.
