Vol. 491 No. 6

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Denis Naughten

Question:

162 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Finance the discussions, if any, the Office of Public Works had with the Department of the Environment and Local Government in relation to the provision of sewerage facilities for Castlerea prison, County Roscommon; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12986/98]

In the course of providing the new prison facility at Castlerea, the Office of Public Works had discussions with Roscommon County Council about the feasibility of connecting to the town public sewerage system.

I also understand that the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform was in touch with the county council and the Department of the Environment and Local Government and discussed with it the feasibility of providing for a public system which would cater for the prison needs. It did not ultimately prove possible to connect to the public system and alternative arrangements involving on-site treatment and disposal are now being put in place.
