Vol. 491 No. 6

Written Answers. - Lifeguard Services.

Michael Noonan

Question:

210 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the practice whereby local authorities provide life guards on beaches only in June, July and August and that if fine weather occurs in May or September beaches are unsupervised and drowning accidents occur; the steps he will take to ensure that life guards are on duty on all beaches in both May and September; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13071/98]

Lifeguarding arrangements, including any options for extending periods of cover, are being examined as part of a detailed review of issues relating to safety on beaches which the National Safety Council has been asked to carry out.
