Vol. 491 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

271 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education and Science if a second meeting has been scheduled between his officials and representatives of the Lucan Educate Together School, County Dublin following the recent discussions with an official from the planning section regarding the provision of accommodation on a reserved site to facilitate the substantially increased enrolments for the next school year commencing September 1998; the progress, if any, to date in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12623/98]

Lucan Multi-Denominational School was established in September 1997 with temporary recognition. The purpose of temporary recognition is to enable the school to demonstrate over a period of time that it has a viable future. During that period, the onus is on the school management to provide temporary accommodation for the school. My Department normally grant-aids 50 per cent of any reasonable rental charges accruing under this arrangement.

At the meeting referred to by the Deputy, which was held on the 20 May last, it was agreed, in the context of the current temporary status of the school, that the board of management would address the short to medium term accommodation needs of the school. In this regard, acquisition of an identified site and placement of temporary accommodation thereon will be pursued by the school authorities. My Department will assist the school in determining the suitability of the site by allocating a technical staff member to carry out a professional assessment. This will be organised when a site map has been submitted by the school as agreed.

The school authorities applied recently for permanent recognitiion for the school and the application is being processed. The question of permanent accommodation will be addressed when the school receives permanent recognition. It has been agreed with the school authorities that a second meeting would be more appropriate when the issue of permanent recognition has been finalised and this will be organised accordingly. In the meantime, the school authorities have agreed to keep my Department informed of progress on arrangements for next September.

Willie Penrose

Question:

272 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science the situation in relation to the state of progress being made by his Department in ensuring permanent accommodation for 200 pupils at a school (details supplied) in County Westmeath; when construction works will commence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12675/98]

The design team is currently preparing the Stage Two — Outline Sketch Scheme of my Department's design team procedures for the extension project at the school in question.

As this project is at an early stage of the architectural planning process the question of proceeding to construction does not arise but the Deputy can be assured that it is my intention that this project will proceed to construction when all stages of design process have been successfully completed.
