Vol. 491 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Education Needs.

Nora Owen

Question:

300 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will approve the provision of a unit for children with special education needs in accordance with the application from Lusk national school, County Dublin, in view of the fact that there is an urgent need for these places in north County Dublin. [12889/98]

My Department is actively pursuing the possibility of establishing a special class to cater for children with specific learning disability in north County Dublin. I understand that an application to establish such a class in the school to which the Deputy refers has already been examined by my Department's inspectorate but that this option was not considered to offer the best solution to the needs of the north County Dublin area.

I understand that my Department is currently considering more suitable locations for the special class.

I should also point out that there are currently two special classes for children with specific learning disability in St. Oliver Plunkett national school, Malahide.
