While no formal submissions have yet been made to the EU in relation to the next round of funding preliminary work has been ongoing for some time. As part of this process, CIE has recently submitted a review of mainline rail investment needs to my Department in the context of securing EU or other funding in the post 1999 period. This includes investment proposals for the Athlone to Westport and Ballina lines. Further work, including an economic and financial evaluation, is being carried out.
