Vol. 491 No. 7

Written Answers. - Garda Pay.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

190 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform whether he has received notice from the Garda Representative Association regarding a revised pay offer for members; the action, if any, he will take on foot of these representations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13141/98]

Informal contacts have been continuing between my Department and the Garda Representative Association since the association's Annual Delegate Conference last month. The purpose of those contacts is to try to agree a formula which would enable the association to call off its protest action and return to the pay discussions.

The official side made an offer of 5.5 per cent pay increase to the Garda Representative Association. On the recommendation of Mr. Declan Brennan, the independent chairman of the pay discussions, an increase of a further 1.5 per cent was offered based on anticipated productivity and savings. These are the only offers official or unofficial which were made to the association.
