Vol. 491 No. 7

Written Answers. - Output and Performance Indicators.

Richard Bruton

Question:

229 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for the delay in establishing quantitative output indictors outlined in the Department's strategy statement (details supplied). [13289/98]

Considerable progress has been made in establishing output indicators for my Department's areas of responsibility. Some of the areas in which progress has been made are mentioned in the strategy statement. Data on the EUassisted programmes which include performance indicators are prepared twice yearly for the relevant monitoring committees. Indicators which facilitate international comparison of education systems are produced annually for bodies such as the OECD, UNESCO and the European Commission. I intend to extend and further refine the quantity, quality and relevance of the types of indicator being produced and I intend to further develop appropriate management information systems.

Richard Bruton

My Department receives assistance towards the delivery of programmes in the education sector from the Operational Programme for Human Resources Development, the Operational Programme for Industrial Development and the Operational Programme for Tourism. Data for 1997, in respect of the agreed performance indicators for the measures assisted by the Operational Programmes for Human Resources Development and Industrial Development was prepared by my Department for the spring monitoring committee meetings. I am arranging to have this information forwarded to the Deputy. The indicators in respect of the Operational Programme for Tourism were collated by CERT and submitted to the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation.
