Question:

126 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Defence the details of, and totals paid in, specific allowances to PDF personnel serving in FCA appointments in each of the years from 1995 to 1997; and the estimated cost for 1998. [13217/98]

Special allowances are paid to personnel of the Permanent Defence Force employed on duties with the FCA to cover necessary subsistence and other expenses, apart from travelling expenses, associated with such employment. The current rates for non-commissioned personnel are £18.86 per week in the case of personnel filling appointments in urban areas and £41.67 per week in the case of personnel filling appointments in rural areas. The rates for officers range from £3.34 to £8.93 per day. In addition, personnel who are required to use their private cars in the course of their official duties are paid travelling expenses in accordance with the rates which apply in the public service generally.
