Vol. 492 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ophthalmic Services.

Seán Haughey

Question:

137 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Health and Children if eye laser treatment operations are provided by the health care system free of charge in exceptional circumstances, subject to certain charges, for people in category 2 who do not have a medical card; where this surgery is normally carried out in the Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13542/98]

It is not clear whether the Deputy's question relates to eye laser treatment generally or whether he is referring to a particular condition. I understand, for example, that laser treatment for the correction of acute corneal conditions is provided in the Dublin public hospital sector, subject to normal eligibility criteria.

Proposals for the introduction of laser treatment for corrective vision are being developed at present. I am aware, for example, that the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, Dublin, is in the process of assessing the cost and service issues involved in introducing this new service.

If the Deputy has a particular case in mind, perhaps he would forward the details to me and I will have the matter examined.
