Vol. 492 No. 1

Written Answers. - Persons in Custody.

David Stanton

Question:

211 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will provide details of all cases of detention and imprisonment under his remit; the number of persons incarcerated in each category; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13525/98]

I assume the Deputy is referring to persons in custody in penal institutions. On Friday 5 June 1998 there were a total of 2,593 persons in custody made up of persons serving sentences of imprisonment or of detention, and-or on remand. However, records are not maintained is a fashion which would allow the number of persons in custody in each category to be easily determined. To do so would require the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of scarce staff time to an extent that could not be justified at present.
