Vol. 492 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bovine Diseases Levies.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

18 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reason the reduction in disease levies as part of the new brucellosis eradication programme has not been made. [13464/98]

Proposals to reduce the rates of bovine diseases levies from £2.50 to £2 per animal slaughtered or exported live and 5p to 4p per gallon of milk supplied for sale have been approved by the Government. Draft regulations to effect the reductions proposed will be submitted shortly to both Houses of the Oireachtas. It is hoped to progress the matter through both Houses before the summer recess.

Based on the 1997 receipts from the bovine diseases levies, the proposed reductions, if introduced, should result in a saving of approximately £2 million to farmers in a twelve month period.
