Vol. 492 No. 1

Written Answers. - Marine Accidents.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

51 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the date on which he will publish the report into the Jenalisa accident; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13424/98]

As the Deputy may be aware, a report on the investigation into the sinking of the Jenalisa was completed by the Marine Survey Office of my Department and was forwarded to the Attorney General's office for legal vetting.

Officials from my Department have been working in consultation with that office to clarify a number of complex legal issues which arose in relation to the publication of the report.

As I have have recently, I very much regret that progress in this matter has not been as quick as I would like, and I am aware that the continued delay in reaching the publication date for the report is a matter of considerable concern to the relatives of those lost in this tragic sinking. I can assure the Deputy that I am personally making every effort to ensure that the legal vetting process is completed so that publication of the report will occur in the near future.
