As I indicated in my reply to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 7, 18, 28, 41, 45, and 69 of 14 May 1998, the Garda Commissioner ordered an investigation into the alleged surveillance of two journalists employed by RTE. On being interviewed by a senior garda officer investigating the matter, neither journalist was able to provide direct evidence of surveillance taking place.
The Garda investigation of these allegations remains open, but so far, no evidence has come to light which would enable the Garda to submit a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions seeking directions for prosecutions. The suggestion that a serving member of the Garda Síochána was involved in the surveillance operation, if there was one, is a very serious matter. I am informed by the Garda authorities that, as matters stand, the Garda are not aware of the reports suggested. Furthermore, according to the Garda authorities, at no stage during the investigation was there any suggestion that a serving member of an Garda
Síochána was involved in the alleged unauthorised surveillance of the two journalists in question, nor did evidence of such activity come to light. However, if anyone has any information on this aspect of the matter, I exhort him to contact the Garda immediately.
