Question:

461 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the rate of payment to persons of different ages on Youthreach; and the total cost per person broken into different cost categories such as staff, training allowances and rental. [16032/98]

The weekly allowance for trainees participating in the Youthreach programme are as follows:

The travel allowance ranges from £3.60, for those who have to travel between three and five miles, to £25.60 for those travelling 40 to 50 miles. The Accommodation allowance is £27.50 and the meal allowance is £3
The overall average unit cost per youthreach place in 1998 is estimated at £6,679. This breaks down into unit costs of £1,830 for allowances, £3,307 for staff pay and £1,542 for non-pay purposes, of which approximately £228 is for rental.
