Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

480 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education and Science whether a member of his Department's psychological service has liaised with the clinical services of the South-Eastern Health Board to establish the nature of the needs of a person (details supplied) in County Wexford and to make recommendations on educational provisions in view of the fact that mainstream primary education will be possible for this person only with appropriate supports and for whom special education has been deemed inappropriate as he is not mentally handicapped; and the steps, if any, taken by his Department to ensure that the necessary supports will be in place when he starts primary school in September 1998. [16288/98]

Due to the large volume of casework which had to be dealt with before the end of the period of State examinations, a consultation has not yet taken place between the psychologists of my Department and of the South-Eastern Health Board in relation to this case. This consultation will now take place in the very near future and detailed recommendations will be made to the special education section of my Department in time for arrangements to be made for September 1998.
