Vol. 493 No. 4

Written Answers. - Psychological Service.

Michael Ring

Question:

184 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if psychological help will be provided by her Department to a person (details supplied) in County Mayo following an alleged incident at her school. [16435/98]

Arising from the earlier parliamentary question concerning the family mentioned, a member of my Department's psychological service met the parents towards the end of May 1998. The purpose of the meeting was to establish whether psychological help was required by their daughter and, if so, if it should be provided by the Department of Education and Science.

It seems their daughter is making good progress in her present school and that she does not appear at present to need psychological intervention of an educational nature. It has been made clear to the parents that, if such help should be needed, my Department will provide it. Her school is one of those which has been allocated to one of the recently appointed educational psychologists, who will keep the situation under review.

In respect of certain other concerns the parents had, they were given information about how to make a referral to the health board services, and were given assistance in this matter.
