Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Physical Education Facilities.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

405 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will release funding for a school (details supplied) in Dublin 11 to facilitate the construction of a much needed gymnasium in view of the fact that there are over 700 pupils in the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19409/98]

It is the policy of my Department to provide PE halls on a phased basis as resources permit to all schools, which do not already have them.

The question of providing physical education facilities at the school in question can only be considered in the context of the capital available for post-primary building purposes generally. Because of the huge demand for classroom accommodation in schools throughout the country, I am not in a position at this stage to state when funding will be made available for this project. However, this project will continue to be reviewed in the light of available finances and competing priorities.
