Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Curriculum Development.

Richard Bruton

Question:

372 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has assessed the case for including business studies in the core curriculum; if he has included adequate business representation on curriculum review groups considering these issues; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19928/98]

Business studies is not a compulsory subject for the junior certificate curriculum at present. I am awaiting a review of the junior certificate curriculum by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and this is expected by the end of 1998. The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment has adequate business representation on its various syllabi committees for the different business subjects. Business interests are represented on the council which also engages in a wide consultative exercise which includes business interests when syllabi are being revised. Business interests have been actively involved in the Business 2000 initiative which provide up to date material on many companies for use as case studies in schools in the study of business subjects at leaving certificate level.
