Vol. 495 No. 5

Written Answers. - Adult Education.

Denis Naughten

Question:

184 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science the funding provided by his Department for adult education in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20758/98]

The information requested by the Deputy is set out in the following Table.

The figures shown represent expenditure on adult education which can readily be identified separately. They exclude services for which separate costs of adult participation are not maintained, such as the costs of mature students in third level education and PLC courses, education provision for participants on the back to education allowance schemes, the prison education service, the costs of posts of responsibility allocated to second level schools on foot of part-time adult participants, and the costs of staff assigned to adult education and literacy services in the vocational education committees.

The provision for adult literacy was doubled in 1998 and is being used to support innovative projects under an adult literacy development fund which will inform future policy and practice in this area. In addition, a new childcare measure has been introduced for the children of participants on VTOS, Youthreach and senior traveller training centre programmes.
