Vol. 495 No. 6

Written Answers - Income Tax Liability.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

122 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance the number of adults who have no liability for personal income tax on the basis that their income is less than the tax exemption threshold; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20898/98]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the number of individuals on tax records who are not effectively liable to income tax for the current income tax year because of the operation of tax free allowances and exemption limits is of the order of 338,000. Some 63,500 of that number qualify for exemption from tax under the exemption limits alone. A further 78,000 also qualify for a reduced tax bill under marginal relief associated with the exemption limits. These figures are provision and are likely to be revised.
