Question:

205 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Defence the number of Irish Defence Forces members killed in action while serving overseas with the United Nations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21376/98]

Thirty-five members of the Permanent Defence Force have been killed by violence while serving overseas with the United Nations. Seventeen of these were killed while serving with the United Nations Operation in the Congo, UNuC. A further 16 were killed while serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, and two were killed while serving with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisations, UNTSO, in the Middle East. One other soldier, Private Kevin Joyce, who was serving with UNIFIL has been missing in action since 1981.
