Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Attention Deficit Disorders.

Jack Wall

Question:

478 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Health and Children if a service will be established in each health area for sufferers of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, based on the internationally accepted prevalence rate of 1 to 3 per cent; and if adequate funding will be made available to each health board for this provision. [21932/98]

Attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder (ADHD) come within the remit of the child and adolescent psychiatric services and each of the health boards now has a dedicated child and adolescent psychiatric service headed by a consultant child psychiatrist.

As I recently stated, a review of child and adolescent psychiatric services is currently being undertaken by my Department and the special needs of children with conditions such as ADD and ADHD are being examined as part of this review.

The further development of child and adolescent psychiatric services will be considered in the light of the availability of resources in 1999.
