Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 599 of 3 November 1998, the senior garda investigating the disappearance of persons has been shown a copy of the book referred to; and the reason this was not confirmed in the reply on 3 November 1998. Question:

383 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the Garda Síochána has investigated allegations contained in a publication (details supplied) that a named Irish person was involved in multiple murders. [22772/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 382 and 383 together.

It is not the practice for me as Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to comment on an ongoing Garda investigation, unless the circumstances of the investigation are so unusual as to warrant comment by me. I am not satisfied that this is the case in relation to the current investigation. However, the Deputy may be assured that the Garda generally make themselves aware of any publication which might have relevance to an investigation.
