Vol. 496 No. 6

Written Answers - Computer Programmes.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

135 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the arrangements, if any, she has put in place in her Department to offset any adverse effects of the millennium bug; the effects the millennium bug will have; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23520/98]

Minister for Public Enterprise (Mrs. O'Rourke): The millennium bug is a problem caused by electronic components and computer software not correctly recognising the onset of the new millennium. If not rectified, this would have the potential to cause wide-ranging failures of computer software and electronically controlled equipment much of which is vital for the smooth running of a technological society such as our own.
My Department has had in place for the past two years a programme to deal systematically with this problem. This programme is very well advanced with the bulk of the remedial work and testing being due for completion by the end of this year and the remainder by early to mid next year.
I am also monitoring on a regular basis the progress of the State agencies under my aegis in preparing for the year 2000. I am informed by these agencies that they are satisfied that all their critical systems will be operational in time for 1 January 2000.
There are formal regular reporting procedures on progress in respect of both my Department and the State agencies to Government.
I am, therefore, confident in the ability of both my Department and the State agencies for which I am responsible to cope adequately with the millennium bug. However, as a matter of prudence, I will be ensuring that appropriate contingency plans are in place.
