Vol. 496 No. 6

Written Answers - Agricultural Schemes.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

167 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the amount of moneys his Department spent on the 1986 fodder scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23480/98]

There was no fodder scheme in operation in 1986. Instead, with a view to helping farmers to meet difficulties caused by the adverse conditions in the summer of 1986, special aid in the form of increased cattle headage payments was secured from the EU.

Donal Carey

Question:

168 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to reports from Teagasc that large numbers of farmers in County Clare have been excluded from the 1998 fodder scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23481/98]

The fodder scheme is directed at all sheep farmers with mountain grazing and suckler cow producers, and small dairy farmers — with milk quotas of less than 35,000 gallons — in district electoral divisions — DEDs — in the worst affected areas. These areas were identified in a Teagasc survey completed in September and the same general procedures for selecting them were applied in all counties.
