Deirdre Clune

Question:

381 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the arrangements, if any, he has put in place in his Department to offset any adverse effects of the millennium bug; the effects the millennium bug will have; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23527/98]

My Department and the agencies under the aegis of my Department have been working on the year 2000 problem for some time and a comprehensive programme of work to rectify the problem is well under way. All potentially affected systems have been identified at this stage and detailed work plans to rectify the problem are in place. Part of this process involved an assessment of the business risks of non-compliance. With regards to IT systems, a combination of replacement of older obsolete systems and remedial action on more recent systems is being adopted.

A year 2000 monitoring group, chaired by a Deputy Secretary and made up of representatives from my Department and all agencies under its aegis, was established in August last to oversee the project and to address any issues which may arise. In addition, separate year 2000 committees have been operating in the Garda Síochána and Land Registry for some time now.

I am satisfied that my Department and the agencies under the aegis of the Department have a detailed programme of work in place and that every effort is being made to ensure compliance is achieved.
