Vol. 496 No. 6

Written Answers - Examinations Fees.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

441 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education and Science the amount of revenue raised by his Department through examination fees for 1998, broken down by examination; and the anticipated revenue for 1999. [23752/98]

Recognised schools which enter candidates for the certificate examinations are also responsible for the collection of examination fees. Fees are, therefore, submitted en bloc to my Department and a break down of the fees by examination is not readily available.

However, it is estimated that in 1998 £2.3 million was received for the leaving certificate and £2 million for the junior certificate. In addition, £86,000 was received for the trade examinations with a further £50,000 anticipated. It is also estimated that £150,000 will be received from external leaving certificate candidates for the 1999 examinations. Therefore, the total fees collected in 1998 will be about £4.586 million.

It should be noted that in 1998 I removed examination fees from all students who are covered by the medical card scheme either directly or as the dependants of medical card holders.

Regarding 1999 it is anticipated that £4.8 million will be collected in examinations fees.
